Though it may seem silly, I have indeed found a way for me personally to beat writer's/creative block. I am not sure how much it is going to work with everyone else though- it could be different for everyone. Not one thing can help beat writer's/creative block, but I found this really helped me out a lot and I have a hard time actually focusing on anything.
I'm not sure what to call it, so I will call it, “Active thinking”. Thinking is something that I find extremely important when trying to fight the block. I usually let things simmer and stir for a bit in my head because it helps with my creative process- this is just something I do personally a lot of others may not- you do not have to do this. It's just a tool I use. But with active thinking, it's relatively simple. Hopefully it will work with you.
If you are a faster typist than a writer, then using a word document would be most helpful to you than writing it down. If you enjoy writing by all means, write. It's whatever works better with you. All you have to do with active thinking is think and write down what you're thinking. Kind of like a messy essay, this enables you to have more organized thoughts and to look back at what you think, then keep writing with it. Write out as much as you can like you're talking to yourself. Don't worry about it being stupid or whatever, this is a tool for you and only you. You can keep your ideas organized and saved later on and look back at them. It's a lot better than simply using a white board or chalk board because you have a record of what you actually were thinking at the time.
As you go along you should be able to get some better and better ideas and perhaps form something in your head. I'll give you an example:
Okay say I am looking for a story about sunflowers. Sunflowers come from a sunflowers patch, but what could be found in sunflower patches? Maybe something magical or perhaps insects? Could insects be magical and be maintaining the sunflowers or even protecting them? Maybe we can think of fairies too as being something magical associated with flowers. But why are they protecting the sunflowers? Maybe they pollinate them or perhaps they hold some secret power, maybe they're for food-
You see, you don't need to worry about fact checking stuff or whatever right away, but the information for your thoughts are there and are organized. They enable you to go back and say, hey, maybe insect fairies could work or something. Just by example.
Thanks for taking the time to read this. If this works or doesn't work for you feel free to leave comments.
